Perched high on the hills of Happy Valley, JIRA is designed for quintessential Hong Kong living; regular indoor entertaining, and ample space for both kids and adults alike.

Working with the original plan of the home, we transformed this four-bedroom apartment into an open, nurturing, and family-oriented abode

The interiors correspond to the encasing architecture and the surrounding landscape resulting in a material palette and detailing that ties the home to its environment and forges a sense of place.

Our top priority was to design a home that fostered a conscious relationship between members of the family and provided the flexibility for young children to play and grow in. What has replaced the old is a study, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living room, four-bedrooms, and two-bathrooms; arranged in the order of work, leisure, and relaxation.

Accommodating the hectic nature of the couple’s occupation, we ensured that the master bedroom was designed away from the day-to-day living spaces, creating a tranquil environment for the couple to relax, unwind, and recharge in. The study is tucked away in the read end of the home, serving as a private space for the owners to work, read, and listen to music

The interiors correspond to the encasing architecture and the surrounding landscape resulting in a material palette and detailing that ties the home to its environment and forges a sense of place. Select and curated openings in each room reveal spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, bringing the natural in while softly casting shadows internally.

The addition of the fireplace provides the meaningful symbolism of hearth and home, injecting a sense of warmth into the living area for the family to come together despite their busy schedules

Unlike some renovations where there is a singular colour palette and treatment throughout the entire house, here, each room has been thoughtfully expressed to respond to the light, the feel of each room, and, importantly, how each space is used and who by. The living room features soft pale grey walls of micro cement, while the master bedroom is dark and moody with walnut-toned walls, headboards, and a dressing table. In the children’s bedrooms, lighter shades of browns and greys are layered to naturally lift the space, an adaptable palette that allows the room to evolve with its growing inhabitant. Classical elegance is present in the detailing of joinery and selection of furnishings, through a combination of rattan chairs, hand-woven fabrics, vintage-esque vases, and hanging mirrors. Prior to their move to Hong Kong, the couple was based in the United States where they pursued their studies. The addition of the fireplace not only serves as a remembrance of their time in the country but also provides the meaningful symbolism of hearth and home, injecting a sense of warmth into the living area for the family to come together despite their busy schedules
