HERA

A deep, moody palette defines the interiors of HERA. With a preference for raw, primitive environments, we explore shades of black furniture, textiles, and materiality to create a place of comfort and solitude for the family.

Under the illumination of natural light, these materials act as a deliberate canvas that allows shadows to animate the interiorsthroughout the day and across seasons.

Project: Private Residence

Size: 1,105 sq ft

Location: Pok Fu Lam

Completion Date: September 2022

This family home is nestled in the steep hillsides of Pok Fu Lam and opens itself up through curated apertures. These apertures help embed the home with the surroundings and allow the family to observe the changing conditions of the natural world. The minimalist backdrop further adds to this by highlighting the charm of the green landscape while the choreography of natural light offers a unique feeling in every room. The home is comprised of an open living and dining room, kitchen, and two bedrooms.

The owners prioritised their time spent together as a family and we looked to incorporate simple yet functional elements that would encourage family living. The living room became the heart of the home and we worked closely with the owners to curate a personal collection of furniture and art within. Behind the sofa, you will find a recessed wall shelf, where we deliberately carved one of the existing walls to incorporate a number of black stainless steel shelving. Soft furnishings also offer the family a cosy corner to come together for meals or meaningful conversations.

In the home’s communal spaces, the sliding doors are coated in the same material as the walls and ceilings to maintain consistent visual cleanliness. The same shade of grey is carried throughout the walls of the home, reliant instead on the curvature of its edges to distinguish between private and public spaces. Frosted glass chandeliers and dainty wall lamps were opted forinstead of fixed ceiling lights to create a lightly dimmed environment at night.

The master bedroom and child’s bedroom feature custom-made, full-height cabinets crafted entirely in blackened timber. These cabinets are also completed with black-toned glass doors that reflect the surrounding scenery.
