Nestled in the quaint neighbourhood of Mid-Levels, Hong Kong, the BEER Residence is a welcoming abode, designed for a young family of three.

To accommodate the desires and needs of a growing family, we thoughtfully rearranged an 863 sqft apartment, separating the public and private areas. The more communal functions, the living room, dining area, kitchen, and guest bathroom, are contained at the front of the home, providing the family with a central, connected space for relaxation and entertainment.

The design rejects the traditional separation of spaces, making way for adaptive dualism and family living.

The addition of pocket sliding doors amongst these functions allows them to interweave with one another or to segment individual spaces for privacy and repose. The varying kinds and arrangements of furnishings add a playful touch to the home, giving way to a range of settings that cater for different family activities, while the soft textures, forms, and rounded corners gave the child a safe space to manoeuvre and play freely. While adhering to the quintessence of urban living, the married couple hopes to minimise their child’s exposure to electrical goods, evolving a calm and welcoming home, designed to set the foundations that foster good family relationships.

In the absence of fixed walls, we looked to colours and materiality to create a distinction between spaces. The choice of colours is pared back and restrained, shifting from grey and peach hues that wrap the walls and ceilings, to dusty pink and red furnishings, further punctuated by gold accents planted at every corner. Materials here were kept consistent and designed to be hardwearing, textural, and visually appealing. Honey-toned oak wood flooring forms the central base of the home, while the kitchen opts for a dusty green tiling, distinguishing the kitchen from the rest of the home by contrasting the warm tones imbued through the timber flooring with a cool and clean vibe.

The private side of the home, situated towards the back of the home, covers the master bedroom and bathroom, lends to a solemn palette with prominent use of green paint and furnishings to induct a sense of tranquility; allowing the family to rest after a long day of activities in the living area.
